HTC Unveils First World Phone In The EVO Family: The EVO Design 4G

HTC EVO Design 4G

HTC has just added another phone to its line of EVO handsets, the HTC EVO Design 4G. While it can’t necessarily match the specs of its EVO 3D cousin, the EVO Design 4G does have a trick up it’s sleeve — compatibility with CDMA, HSPA and GSM networks, making it the first global phone in the EVO family.

Along with global network support, the EVO Design 4G also sports a 4-inch WVGA 960×540 touchscreen, which is just a tad smaller than the EVO 4G and EVO 3D. The phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread powered by a Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor, though we won’t be seeing the same dual-core snappiness we did on the 3D.

HTC’s Sense 3.0 UI is also alive and well on the new handset, along with a 5-megapixel rear shooter and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat.

Sprint is offering the EVO Design 4G for $99 on-contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. Availability begins October 23.

T-Mobile’s Next Big Android Phone Gets Caught On Camera

HTC Amaze

If you recognize the phone up top, ye ol’ hypothalamus is probably already hard at work churnin’ out the “Do Want” signals. If you don’t, here’s all you need to know: it’s called the HTC Amaze 4G (or the HTC “Ruby”, if we’re goin’ by its internal codename), it’s T-Mobile’s next flagship Android smartphone, and it’s a beast.

While this is by no means the first time Ruby has found its way behind a lens, it’s the first time we’ve seen it in any state of operation — in other words, it’s the first time we’ve really seen it turned on.

As you may note, this specific unit lacks T-Mobile branding — that’s because it was snapped by Thai Android site DroidSans at an event over in their home turf, where HTC is seemingly a bit less worried about keeping this device under wraps. With that said, this is very much the same device as what’s been floating the rumor mil around as T-Mobile’s Amaze 4G.

So, why is this one worth firing up the ol’ dopamine production center?

Check out the specs, as confirmed by the rather blurry shot #4 below:

  • 1.5 Ghz Dual-Core CPU
  • 4.3″ qHD (960×540) display
  • 1GB Ram
  • 8 megapixel rear camera
  • 2 megapixel front camera
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi

Now, the only question that remains: why the heck hasn’t T-Mobile made this thing official yet? Sure, they need to give their Galaxy S II some breathing room — but come on, guys, get this thing on the shelves.

HTC Releases Evo 3D Bootloader Unlock Tool

evo-3d

It’s only been a few days since HTC got its bootloader unlock tool up and running, but unfortunately it was only made available to owners of the European/international version of the HTC Sensation. Obviously that didn’t do a lot to help our American hackers get what they want. But today, HTC threw some love our way making the bootloader unlock tool available to owners of the HTC Evo 3D, according to HTC’s Facebook page.

If you’re interested in a little Evo customization, head on over to HTC Dev for instructions. You’ll have to download the next update, which will come over the air. And just in case you’re a noob, it’s only fair that I warn you: unlocking the bootloader on your phone voids any and all warranties associated with the phone. So once it’s unlocked, proceed with caution in all your tinkering endeavors.

Game on, hackers!

“Android for Girls?” HTC Bliss Coming to Verizon

HTC_new-logo

Verizon is preparing to launch an Android phone targeted towards women, the HTC Bliss. The device comes in a “pretty” seafoam-like green, and will include a dangling charm that lights up when you have a missed call or new message.

Oh, and here’s the best part – the phone is also rumored to ship with special women-friendly apps, like a calorie counter and an app for shopping.

Groan.

In case you can’t tell, I’m not a fan of phones targeted towards women.

But first, the news:

The fact that the phone exists is not new information. Designs for the device were leaked back in May, when This is My Next… cited sources who claimed the phone would be a midrange device, something of a cross between the HTC Desire S and the Desire Z.

Today, we have more information on the possible specs, which indeed confirms this phone is no powerhouse. The sources for these claims are anonymous leaks, however, reported via YouHTC and HTC Inside. So keep that in mind.

The Bliss will reportedly ship with a Qualcomm MSM7x30 processor, likely the MSM7630 (due to Verizon’s CDMA network), running at 800 Mhz. This puts it in line with other HTC phones like the Desire Z and the T-Mobile G2. The Bliss’ GPU will be the Adreno 205 and it will run Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread).

The only standout feature, if you can even call it that, is HTC Sense 3.5, the newest version. HTC Sense is an overlay that attempts to provide a more attractive and user-friendly interface to Android, and is one HTC’s key selling points, or key drawbacks, depending on your personal opinion. I’ve found Sense to be slow, and typically swap it out for an alternative like LauncherPro or the GO Launcher instead. You may disagree.

According to the leaked Verizon roadmap, posted here by IGN, the Bliss is due to arrive next month.

Appealing to the Ladies?

What bothers me about the idea of a “girl’s” Android phone is that somehow my gender has different needs and expectations than their male counterparts do when it comes to smartphones. Colored devices and cell phone charms are not necessarily “womanly” things – they may appeal to a younger demographic, or to those who concern themselves with appearances, perhaps. But that doesn’t mean only women.

What I take issue with is the gender-biased marketing tactics Verizon has chosen to engage in since day one one, starting with its Droid campaigns, featuring robots and comments about “racehorses duct-taped to Scud missiles.” So stereotypically male.

Why does Android have to be pitched differently to men and women? Last time I checked, women want the same things men do in their devices: power, performance, great hardware, great software, plus lots and lots of apps.

And not just the dieting ones.
